Kenya Sevens rugby second-string Morans are expected to play in a tournament in South Africa in November, team manager Steve Sewe has announced.

Sewe said the team will play in the tournament after the Safari Sevens. The team is also lined up to play in Italy and England next year.

Sewe expects intense competition for places in the squad, especially with the ongoing Nationals Sevens Circuit.

“It's long overdue. Morans can't just be playing one tournament.  We need to start seeing them play in several tournaments to gain the exposure and experience,” added Sewe.

The Morans last played at the Africa Cup Sevens in June and had an underwhelming campaign, where they finished sixth —something not lost on Sewe.

"I believe the team trained for a short period and this does not augur well for competition. So the lessons learnt from there will be implemented in the new season and we will have longer training periods for them," he noted.

Sewe expects the competition to be fierce for the Morans, especially, with the talent on offer at the National Sevens Series going on.

“ I expect to see new faces for Morans and competition to be very intense. If you see the talent on offer at the Sevens, it gives us a headache to choose the team,” he added.

He expects more talent to be unearthed in the final two legs of the series in Mombasa and Nakuru. “ I believe we will see more players raising their hands for selection to the team."

The 25-man Sevens squad will report to training mid-next month on the conclusion of the national series to start preparation for the Safari Sevens and World Seven Series at the end of November in Dubai

Elsewhere, former Menengai Oilers Harold Anduvate has joined New York Old Blue RFC.

Anduvate termed the experience an eye-opener. "There isn’t much to say about the difference as rugby here is also growing. Maybe just focusing more on the soft skills and team marketing both by players and the club to attract more corporate investment in the sport,” he added.

He joins Timothy Mmasi and former Kenyan international Monate Akuei in the Big Apple.
