Catholic Monks are targeting podium finishes in the final two legs of the National Sevens Circuit, team manager Caleb Kiprotich has said.

The Langata-based side have been this campaign's surprise package. They are fourth in the standings with 55 points ahead of fancied opponents like Nondies, Strathmore Leos and Nakuru.

Speaking Wednesday, Kiprotich is confident his charges can be in the top three at the Driftwood and Prinsloo Sevens.

Their closest has been semifinal defeats at the Christie and Kabeberi Sevens.

“We have come close twice. The boys have the desire and determination to correct the errors we made at Kabeberi to be a contender in the final two rounds," said Kiprotich.

Skipper Hassan Wambani, Brian Nyamboki, Samuel Omollo and Victor Omupere are among the team's best performers.

Kiprotich attributed their success in the Sevens game to a working structure, good coaching by a technical team led by coach Simon Jawichre and a hungry group of players.

"The structure and systems we have are very solid. Our mantra is defence first and it has worked. Our set plays in attack are very effective," added Kiprotich.

Monks are in Pool 'D' of the Driftwoods Sevens alongside Kabete Stallions, Zetech University and Strathmore Leos.

Kiprotich said they will take one game at a time.

“It's a fascinating pool we have. Fatigue will be a factor considering that all the teams will be travelling to Mombasa. But the boys are relishing the challenge,” said Kiprotich.

Kiprotich has fingers crossed as he prays that some of his players get call-ups to the national team for the Safari Sevens in October and the World Sevens Series in December.

“I hope some of our boys get selected in Shujaa or Morans. They have lifted their hands in the tournaments. They deserve it," added Kiprotich.
