Kenya Simbas are set to start training mid-next month ahead of the Elgon Cup clash against Uganda in November.

Speaking Friday, Kenya Rugby Union director of 15s rugby Moses Mukabane said the training starts later than anticipated due to a lack of funds.

However, he doesn't believe this is not an excuse not to win the two-nation title.

“We would have loved to start the preparations yesterday but due to a shortage of funds, we can't. I hope that we can raise funds and put the team in at least two training camps," said Mukabane

The former Mean Machine forward expects the players to be mentally and physically fit for the two-legged encounter.

"A good number of our players have started their pre-season with their clubs. It won't be a struggle to get (them) in shape for the two games,” noted Mukabane.

They have done an extensive review of their disastrous Africa Cup outing in Kampala in July where the Simbas finished fourth after losses to Algeria ( 20-12 ) in the semifinals and Namibia ( 38-27) in the bronze medal match.

Jerome Paarwater's charges were not convincing in their 34-19 win over Senegal in the opening match.

"There was a thorough review after the Africa Cup. (We know) where we must improve. We must get our preparations right with build-up matches. However, this is pegged on finances,” added Mukabane.

They are hunting for opponents for the June 2025 international window, part of their preparations for the Rugby World Cup qualifiers in July 2025.

Kenya will battle Uganda in a quarterfinal blockbuster in Kampala.

“We have started talking to various teams to ensure our boys have the best possible preparations for the World Cup qualifiers,” said Mukabane.

Meanwhile, a Kenya Legends team — comprised of players aged over 35 — face Uganda in the return leg fixture today of a friendly encounter at the RFUEA ground.

Kenya won the first leg 25-15 in Kampala and will be banking on the likes of Kenya Sevens top try-scorer Collins Injera, his brother Humphrey Kayange, Tito Oduk and Nondies' coach Callum Oliver in the backs.

Curtis Lilako, Joel Ng'ang'a, Wilson K'Opondo and Ben Nyambu will be the key actors in the forward pack.
