Eleven people have lost their lives and over 2,000 displaced by floods in Narok south subcounty since the heavy rains began.

Narok South deputy county commissioner Felix Kisalu out of the 11 fatalities, four are family members killed by mudslides in Sagamian, while another two were struck dead by lightning in Ngoben area.

Others are two children killed by mudslides in Chepalungu while the other three drowned. “It is painful to lose lives of our people. This is a big number and we don’t want to lose more lives,” Kisalu said.

The displaced households, the administrator said, were moved to safer areas including schools and churches.

The national and county governments and partners such as Kenya Red Cross are supplying relief food to the affected families.

He urged residents to continue being vigilant and move away from areas prone to flooding.

Meanwhile, a sombre mood engulfed Silibwet village in Nessuit, Njoro subcounty in Nakuru, after villagers woke up to the news of the death of two siblings swept away by the raging floods at Ndarugu River.

Chief Douglas Mutai said a search and rescue operation had kicked off and divers were doing their best to retrieve the bodies of the two sisters aged 15 and 17 years.

The pair were with a friend when crossing the river but they slid and fell into the swollen river. Their friend struggled and swam, but the girls drowned.

The girls identified as Sharon Chepng'etich, 17, and Faith Cheptoo, 15, were pupils at Tegitech Primary School in Grade 7 and 6 respectively.

Mutai told residents to keep off flooded rivers and exercise extra caution as heavy rains bust river banks.

As schools are set to resume learning next Monday, Mutai further advised parents to make arrangements and always attend to their children whenever there are reports of flooding areas to help them get proper guidance and get home safely.
