In the heart of Nairobi lies Mukuru kwa Reuben, a vibrant yet challenging community that has shaped the lives of many, including one young Kenyan whose journey embodies resilience and determination.

Dennis Maina has risen from the hardships of slum life to become an entrepreneur and leader, driven by a desire to transform not only his life but also the lives of those in his community.

Born and raised in Mukuru kwa Reuben, Maina who is now 32 years old reflects on his early education at Gatoto Primary School and Githumu High School, culminating in a degree in Political Science and Sociology from The University of Nairobi.

He describes his upbringing as one of “resilience and grit”, emphasising the harsh realities faced by families in Mukuru.

“The living conditions were almost inhabitable considering the limited resources shared by more than half a million people,” he recalls, highlighting the ongoing struggles within this densely populated area.

Despite these challenges, a common phrase among young Kenyans, “Ipo siku”, serves as a beacon of hope.

It signifies the belief that brighter days are ahead, a conviction that motivated him to change the narrative for himself and his community.

Mother’s impact Central to his story is the profound impact of his mother. He describes her as “God’s gift to humanity” whose relentless efforts to provide for their family instilled in him values that have guided him throughout his life.

“From selling groundnuts and snacks by the roadside to doing odd jobs, she was determined to ensure that we had a meal on the table,” he recalls.

Her unwavering faith and resilience inspired him, even during his moments of teenage mischief.

Reflecting on their shared experiences, he remembers: “Her resilient mindset in the middle of the desert that there is an oasis somewhere for us has always inspired me to keep pushing boundaries.”

This spirit of perseverance laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His entrepreneurial journey began at an early age, assisting his mother in her small business.

“I learnt my first business lessons after school and during holidays from my mother,” he explains.

This experience was more than just an apprenticeship; it was formative in shaping him into the entrepreneur he is today.

He fondly refers to it as an “apprenticeship as a result of circumstances” that he cherishes.

If he could speak to his younger self, he would say: “The world is your oyster... replace your doubts with action, learn faster and keep moving.”

He emphasises the importance of dreaming big and not letting one’s circumstances dictate their reality.

Furthermore, he encourages future generations to extend a helping hand once they achieve their dreams, fostering a cycle of support within their communities.

He also adds that transformation is at the core of his motivation. Hebelieves in continuous evolution personally, professionally, and communally.

“I have always been a transformational leader because I know what it means to have and not to have,” he states.

This understanding has propelled him to establish Suss Ads, a multinational marketing and tech company that empowers others through initiatives like the Suss NextGen Program.

The program aims to equip young individuals with knowledge and skills necessary for success in a digital world.

“It is through the success of Suss Ads that we have also been able to empower and transform,” he affirms, “ Leadership isn’t just about steering today, it is about shaping tomorrow. Through the Suss NextGen Program, we are cultivating the next wave of trailblazers to build on our legacy while forging bold, new paths.”
