In Summary
Kenya is in the final stages of developing Sea-Air Terminals at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa to enhance cargo movement in the region.
Kenya Airports Authority board chairman Caleb Kositany said the new terminal will facilitate the swift conversion of inbound sea freight into airfreight for faster distribution to Kenya’s landlocked neighbours.
“The convergence of multimodal transport solutions across Africa— including air freight, maritime shipping, rail networks, and road transportation—forms the foundation for creating efficient routes-tomarket,” said Kositany.
“These initiatives will be instrumental in realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”
Speaking at the opening of the Air Cargo Africa and Transport Logistics Africa 2025 Conference, the chairman also said Kenya is improving its road network and infrastructure to facilitate regional and intra-African trade.
He pointed out the Lamu PortSouth Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) as a crucial trade route that needs to be proactively leveraged.
The connection between LAPSSET and Isiolo International Airport, he noted, presents a strategic opportunity for rapid cargo movement across Africa.
“With Isiolo’s central positioning, goods can be transported swiftly to any part of Africa by air,” Kositany added.
The Mombasa project is expected to boost Kenya’s role as a major trade hub, and reducing transit times for goods moving across the continent.
According to KAA the project aligns with broader efforts to integrate Africa’s transport networks and streamline logistics for seamless trade under AfCFTA.
Government agencies, including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA), are currently in discussions on trade policies and regulations affecting air cargo.
