Kenya’s tourism sector, which had been steadily recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, is now facing a new challenge: widespread protests in Nairobi.

These demonstrations have significantly disrupted both domestic and international travel, leading to a notable decline in bookings and revenue.

Bobby Kamani, a veteran hotelier and hospitality investor, highlighted the profound effects of the unrest.

“The protests have severely impacted domestic tourism, as many Kenyans are avoiding travel due to fears of violence and roadblocks,” Kamani said.

He pointed out that popular destinations, especially the coastal region, have experienced a sharp drop in visitor numbers, affecting local businesses reliant on tourist traffic.

“The disruptions have placed a heavy burden on hotels, restaurants, and tour operators,” Kamani added.

The international tourism sector is also suffering.

“Kenya’s image as a safe travel destination has been tarnished by the demos. The issuance of travel advisories by several countries deterred potential visitors. International tourists, who had planned their trips in advance, opted for alternative destinations due to the instability,” he noted.

In response to these challenges, Kamani proposed several recovery strategies. Enhancing security measures is paramount.

He also called for efforts to rebuild Kenya’s reputation through positive marketing campaigns and engagement with travel influencers to counteract negative perceptions.

“We need to boost security and clearly communicate our preparedness to handle any threats to restore tourist confidence,” Kamani emphasized.

Kamani suggested that collaboration with the government to address security concerns and introduce tourism incentives, such as discounted rates for travelers, would be beneficial.

“Improving infrastructure, such as roads and transport systems, and utilizing technology for real-time updates on security conditions can further enhance traveler confidence,” he said.

Additionally, community engagement to promote cultural tourism and create job opportunities will play a crucial role in the sector’s recovery.

Lionel Formento, General Manager of Dusit Princess Hotel Residences in Nairobi’s Westland, provided insight into the direct impact of the protests on the hospitality sector.

“The safety and comfort of our guests are our top priorities. We have bolstered our security with enhanced surveillance and close collaboration with local authorities,” Formento said.

He highlighted that the hotel industry is also grappling with economic pressures, including rising fuel and electricity costs.

To manage these challenges, Dusit Princess has adopted energy-efficient technologies and sustainable practices.

“We continuously monitor our operational processes to identify waste reduction opportunities and optimize resource use,” Formento explained.

In response to recent tax policy changes, Formento noted that Dusit Princess has adjusted its pricing and services to remain competitive.

“We’ve reviewed our cost structures and service offerings to continue delivering exceptional value to our guests,” he added.

Formento also revealed that Dusit International is considering expanding its presence in Kenya, citing Nairobi’s vibrant economy and cultural heritage as key factors.

“Nairobi’s dynamic mix of business and leisure opportunities, along with its growing tourism sector and international community, aligns perfectly with our brand’s vision,” he concluded.

Despite the recent protests, the tourism sector in Kenya has shown resilience.

Mohammed Hersi, a seasoned hotelier and former chairman of the Kenya Tourism Federation, expressed optimism about the industry’s future.

“Kenya has recovered remarkably from the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching more than 90 per cent of our 2019 tourism figures,” Hersi said.

He is confident that Kenya will surpass pre-pandemic tourism numbers by 2024.

Hersi noted that the pandemic’s impact was mainly on organized conferences, with domestic leisure travel remaining strong.

“Hotels experienced some cancellations, but domestic leisure travel continued robustly,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Hersi emphasized the importance of sustainability in the tourism sector.

“Sustainability is key. It’s about using resources today while ensuring they are available for future generations,” he said.

He called for improvements in digital travel authorization processes, advocating for the electronic travel authorization (eTA) to be offered upon arrival.

“The government should consider this to streamline travel and enhance convenience for tourists,” he suggested.

Hersi also stressed the need for increased investment in digital infrastructure.

“Going digital is crucial, but it requires investment. Many organisations view digital spending as a waste, which is a misconception,” he noted.

He urged both the government and private sector to invest more in digital solutions to support and enhance the tourism sector.

As Kenya’s tourism industry continues to navigate these turbulent times, the combined efforts of industry leaders, government, and stakeholders will be crucial in restoring confidence and revitalising the sector.

Addressing security concerns, investing in sustainable practices, and enhancing digital infrastructure will be key to ensuring the continued growth and competitiveness of Kenya’s tourism industry on the global stage.
