Retail chain Naivas has become the first Kenyan supermarket to reach 110 stores, following the opening of its new outlet located in Tatu City, Kiambu County.
This almost doubles its closest
competitor, which currently boasts 60 branches across 14 counties.
According to the supermarket chain, the new outlet is positioned to serve the growing community around Tatu City and surrounding areas.
The launch comes at a time when consumers are grappling with economic challenges, but the retailer says it remains focused on its core promise of affordability and value.
“We are excited to bring this new outlet to Tatu City, which we believe will significantly enhance the shopping experience for residents and surrounding communities,” said Naivas Chief of Strategy Andreas Von Paleske. “As the retail landscape continues to evolve, we remain focused on delivering a world-class shopping experience.”
The retailer has emphasized its commitment to providing quality products at competitive prices, aiming to ease the financial burden on shoppers.
Despite the current economic climate, the retailer says it continues to invest in growth, leveraging market research to identify and address gaps in consumer demand.
“Naivas continues to demonstrate its dedication to customer satisfaction through ongoing research and a keen focus on addressing market gaps. The company remains steadfast in its mission to make people’s lives better by offering quality products, exceptional service, and great value for money,” Naivas said in a statement.
In recent years, Kenya's retail sector has been experiencing significant growth, driven by a growing middle class, urbanisation, and an increased use of technology.
According to a Knight Frank report released last week, major supermarkets in Kenya pursued expansion strategies in 2024.
Naivas opened new branches in Kilimani, Nyali, Mavoko, and Tilisi, increasing its nationwide presence to 109 stores.
Carrefour added locations at Runda Mall off Kiambu Road, Nord Mall in Ruiru, and Spring Valley Shopping Centre in Westlands, though it closed its store at Mega Plaza Mall in Kisumu, leaving it with 26 stores across the country.
Chandarana grew its network to 28 outlets, including a new store at Greenwood Village Mall in Nyali. Meanwhile, China Square continued its expansion, launching its 4th and 5th branches at Nyali Bazaar Mall in Mombasa and Mega City Mall in Kisumu.
French-based Decathlon, the world’s largest sporting retailer, launched a 64,500 sq. ft. store at Westgate. This makes it its 3rd store in Kenya, signifying consumers increased focus on active living.
