A section of Kangema residents on Wednesday rejected a report by Infotrak that ranked MP Muturi Kigano as the second-worst performing in development.
The report released on September 27 ranked Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba as the best performing legislator. Isiolo South MP Abdi Tepo was ranked last, while Kigano, who chairs the Justice and Legal Affairs committee, came second last.
Kigano's constituents, however, read mischief, saying the MP's performance as a first-term lawmaker has been exemplary. They cited numerous development projects implemented by the MP and wondered who the research firm interviewed to arrive at the findings.
Joseph Mwathi said the legislator has been working hard without publicly announcing his projects as is the case with some of his counterparts. He cited the Sh300 million Kenya Medical Training Centre being constructed by the national government in partnership with the NG-CDF in Kangema town.
“For many years, we have been travelling to as far as Embu to get admissions for our children and now the college has been brought closer home,” Mwathi said.
The college is being built on a 10-acre parcel and will source a third of its enrolment locally.
Mwathi disputed Infotrak’s claims that it interviewed people from all constituencies and urged the company to seek credible information from each constituency before ranking MPs.
He said the report could have been driven by individuals with political aspirations in 2022, adding that they are satisfied with Kigano’s performance.
Kagenya Gateru said the area has 70 per cent power connectivity with streetlights erected in most shopping centres. All public schools have also been connected to electricity to boost academic performance and security, he said.
Martin Ngotho said the MP has lobbied to have more than 122 kilometres of roads tarmacked and construction is underway. He urged the MP to continue working undeterred saying they are fully behind him.
Charity Njambi praised Kigano for ensuring that the youth are fully engaged in all government projects being implemented in the constituency. She said Kigano has been organising sports through the CDF kitty to keep the youth away from social vices.
Njambi hailed the MP for keeping off politics that has overwhelmed the Mt Kenya region and concentrating on his work as a lawmaker, describing him as a respected national leader.
“In Kangema, we said we do not want politics and our MP is leading by example. Those fighting him through such reports should just stop,” she said.
The Infotrak report caused an uproar in the National Assembly on Tuesday as MPs dismissed the findings as skewed. They questioned the manner in which the research was carried out and accused the company of failing to provide the parameters.
The protests prompted Speaker Justin Muturi to direct the House clerk to seek clarification from the company on the methodology used.
