A 15-acre sugarcane plantation valued at Sh1.5 million has been burnt in Nyando, Kisumu county.

County police commander Samuel Anampiu said the incident is suspected to be arson. He said a group of unknown people set the farm belonging to Harrison Ogada, 66, on fire.

The cause was due to a dispute between Nyando and Nyakach constituents over a dyke erected along the boundary to control River Nyando flooding.

The dyke is said to be affecting residents of Ombaka and Ong'eche in Nyando.

According to the police, the unknown constituents of Nyakach are believed to have started the fire. Police are investigating.

“Police visited the scene. The area is however calm," Anampiu said.

He said a security meeting would be held on Thursday to find the way forward in ensuring harmony between the border communities.

"So far no cause for any alarm whatsoever.”

Meanwhile, police have impounded sacks of bhang of unclassified weight and value and arrested two suspects in Nyando. Stella Odalo and Priscillah Achieng are in custody at Awasi police station.

Anampiu said officers from Awasi police station arrested the suspects on their way to Nyando law courts escorting court files.

“The officers noticed suspicious women having with them two young infants, along the road near Boya waiting to board a Nairobi-bound bus. Beside them were conspicuous sacks tied and scattered along the road,” he said.

The officers discovered the bhang when they searched the two.
