Former Lamu County deputy governor Eric Mugo has announced his bid for the gubernatorial seat come 2022.
Mugo who deputized ex-governor Issa Timamy in Lamu’s first county government from 2013 to 2017, expressed confidence that he learnt the ropes and was ready to serve the people governor.
He says the five years as deputy governor exposed him to the needs of the people and motivated him to seek the top seat so as to be able to attend to them.
Mugo has however not yet disclosed the political outfit which he will use to propel his dream to reality.
“I am ready, I have the experience and the expertise,” said Mugo.
Lamu is plagued by drugs, crime and unemployment.
Mugo said his focus will be on youth empowerment through job creation to keep them busy and off drugs.
“I realize unemployment is the biggest cause of crime and drugs. My administration intends to change that by empowering the youth,” said Mugo.
He is also focusing on empowering farmers to benefit more from the venture if elected.
“We are talking about the establishment of fruit, fish and meat processing industries in Lamu so that our people can get ready markets for their produce and create jobs for the youth,” said Mugo.
He called for peace ahead of the general elections and urged the youth to desist from being misused by politicians.
Other gubernatorial candidates seeking to topple incumbent Fahim Twaha (Jubilee) include ex-governor Issa Timamy (ANC) and Safari Doctor founder and conservation strategist Umra Omar (UDA).
Born on December 29, 1983, Mugo who hails from Baharini area in Mpeketoni, Lamu West is currently on a campaign trail in the region.
Mugo attended Baharini Primary School in Mpeketoni from 1991 to 1998 and thereafter joined Mpeketoni Secondary School from 2000 to 2003 where he served as school captain and credits the position for awakening his leadership abilities.
He holds a Master Degree in Sports Management from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Science in Sports Science from the same institution.
