Kisii Governor James Ongwae on Wednesday assured residents that the 350-bed mother and child hospital will be commissioned in four months.

Ongwae said the project contractor is putting final touches. Mothers and children will be separated from other wards.

He said the four-storey wing will be well equipped to give mothers and children the best medical services they need.

The county chief said his administration not only prioritises the health of mothers and their children but all residents, adding Sh4.7 billion has been allocated in the 2021-22 budget.

“Expectant mothers and children will be receiving the services they have been lacking. The facility is a great achievement,” he said.

The facility will enhance Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital's capacity to 900 beds.

The county boss was speaking at Kisii National Polytechnic where he accompanied Education CS George Magoha for the launch of the institution’s three-day inaugural international conference themed ‘Establishing a unified foundation for sustainable development'.

Ongwae lauded the polytechnic’s management for ensuring that the safety protocols were followed to the later to curb the spread of Covid. He said the Ministry of Health would have not allowed the conference to take place if the safety protocols were ignored.

“I'm impressed with the manner the conference was organised. The sitting arrangement meets all the safety protocols,” he said.

Also present was Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Richard Ngatia.

Ngatia praised the institution’s administration for the measures it has taken to curb the virus.

“I'm impressed by the manner the institution is organised in terms of curbing Covid. Washing points and soap are all over,” Ngatia said.

He said KNCCI has assisted in the production of seven million face masks and distributed them to learners in schools.

Magoha said his ministry is closely monitoring schools over the safety of learners, adding many, if not all, have adhered to the regulations.
