Mandera launches free medical camps to fight cataracts

The Mandera government has embarked on an ambitious campaign to help fight cataracts in the region.

Speaking during a free eye treatment exercise, Dr Stephen Nguku said many residents suffer from eye problems as a result of various complications.

He said at least 300 patients were treated for eye related ailments at the Mandera Referral Hospital.

About 800 people had turned up during the three-day event aimed at ending the disease in the region.

Saudi Hirmoge, a volunteer with Safe Surgical Aid, said they were diagnosing those with severe challenges while those who were not heavily challenged were given medical supplies and advise.

Dr Rashid Adan, an ophthalmologist at the Mandera Referral Hospital, said they were treating people from as far as Ethiopia and Somalia.

The group is expected to move to the other six subcounties to help those who cannot travel to Mandera town.
