Farmers Party has been enjoined in a presidential petition filed by Azimio la Umoja candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua.

The party, led by former Devolution Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, presented a petition to be enjoined in the case to ensure the rights of farmers are protected and their voices heard.

Nyakera and five farmers from Nyamira, Bomet, Kericho, Murang’a and Kiambu counties presented affidavits to the Supreme Court to support their application to be enjoined in the case through lawyer Chege Kamau.

In a statement, he said farmers represent 65 per cent of all voters in the country who fulfilled their civic duty by voting for their candidates of choice.

“I was a gubernatorial candidate in Murang’a and though I was not successful, I can confirm that IEBC conducted the elections in a verifiable, fair and transparent manner,” Nyakera said.

He said the recent polls set a new bar for open governance in elections that the African continent can emulate.

“This petition by the party aligns with the dissenting opinion of Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u in Raila Odinga vs IEBC and others in 2017 which sought the following answers to determine if elections were conducted properly”.

“Was there a problem in registration of voters? Were the voters properly identified at the polling centre? Were the voters allowed to cast their votes peacefully and within good time? Were the votes cast counted and verified at the polling stations?” the statement reads.

The chairperson added that being enjoined in the petition gives an opportunity for the input of an ordinary voter in the most critical decision in the country.

Nyakera said farmers who the party represents are looking forward to a fast resolution of the presidential election petition for normalcy to return that will allow them to continue with their nation-building activities.

The party fronted candidates in all elective positions apart from the presidency in various counties and is a member of the Kenya Kwanza alliance led by President-elect William Ruto.
