Alarm as trailers haul factory equipment from Mumias Sugar

There is a cause for alarm after trailers were photographed carrying what appears to be heavy factory equipment out of Mumias sugar factory.

Sources at the factory confirmed that two trailers carted away factory equipment to an unknown location.

The equipment transported away from the factory which can be seen in the photographs are heavy-duty rollers used as shredders to cut sugar cane into small pieces.

Other image show heaters used to heat the cane juice during the manufacturing process.

The Star has reached out to the current Mumias Sugar management for comment and we will give their side of the story once they respond.

This comes on the heels of President William Ruto announcing at Kakamega State Lodge on December 9th, 2022 that his government will settle the debt for Mumias sugar, and find a new strategic investor to replace the Ugandan firm Sarrai.

Sarrai controversially won the lease in December 2021.

Sarrai's lease was revoked by the high court on April 14, 202 in a protracted case that saw the case take months in courts before the firm was given leeway to start operations.

The judge while revoking the lease wondered why the lowest bidder with Sh5 billion bid was selected when higher bids were more than five times higher.

The judge also wondered how Sh5 billion would settle the Sh23 billion debt that Mumias sugar owed to its creditors.

The judge appointed a new receiver manager Kerato Mirima to replace the previous receiver manager PV Rao who had been awarded the lease to Sarrai.

Rao moved to court to challenge the ruling but the judge declined to hear the application last month.
