Residents of Bogeka Ward, in Kitutu Chache South, in Kisii have pushed for the completion of works on the road linking Nyakoe township to Marani in Kitutu Chache North.
They, however, first want the contractor hired to do the work investigated.
The Star found mounds of earth deserted along the stretch hindering the quick flow of traffic along the road.
The residents accused the contractor of unnecessarily dragging the project beyond the agreed time despite being heavily funded.
The road was tendered in 2016 with a completion period set for 30 months.
It is now two years behind the scheduled completion date according to documents availed by engineers.
The contractor was further hired to do other roads worth Sh2.3 billion across Kitutu Chache North and Kitutu Chache South.
The 10 km stretch they are protesting slow work on connects Kitutu Chache South and Kitutu North.
There are similarities between road projects stalling across the region despite being commissioned.
Those who are raising concern said the onset of rains has already begun to make navigation, both for pedestrians and motorists, extremely difficult.
Winifred Nyantika who led the group said travellers have suffered injuries for falling off bodabodas due to the pathetic state of the road.
"How long are we going to suffer? Look, it is all muddy, it gets worse with rains, we have to walk," said Nyakundi.
Families especially those affected by deaths find it difficult to transport bodies home from mortuaries.
Richard Angwenyi, a timber dealer, asked the local political leaders to fast-track its completion.
Bodaboda chair James Gisairo said they have lost some of their members to accidents along the contested stretch.
Area MCA Richmond Manani, on his part, asked the government to give the project priority so as to ease pain among traders moving goods to the market.
He said already said the economy of t the region continues to be affected greatly in the face of delays to complete the project.
"When I look at the documents regards the Sh 2 billion worth of projects the contractor was awarded, he has been given more than enough to help him finish this road. It is pity we are stuck with mud instead of the tarmacked road the residents wanted," said Manani.
The Nyakoe-Marani road is part of the projects brokered by Kisii political leaders during the first term of Uhuru Kenyatta's administration
