All junior secondary schools in Mathioya constituency are set to benefit from desks from the National Government Constituency Development Fund.

MP Edwin Mugo said he started the programme after realising that some schools do not have sufficient learning materials, especially desks.

Speaking at Kamune Primary School where he donated 60 desks, Mugo said JSS requires as much support as possible to ensure it is successful.

Some learners at the primary school had been forced to use makeshift desks, according to head teacher Anthony Mwangi.

The head teacher said the programme will enable teachers and learners to focus on the syllabus.

MP Mugo said all schools hosting JSS in the area will by June this year receive desks according to their needs.

The legislator said once they receive more funds from the national government, they will construct laboratories to bring practical learning closer to learners.

“Unutilised classrooms will be converted into laboratories. NGCDF will help resolve some of the issues being experienced in the implementation of CBC and we ask Treasury to expedite the release of the remaining funds,” Mugo said.

The MP said the NGCDF will also distribute tanks to some schools to help them harvest water during the rains for use during the dry season.

He said learners in some schools are forced to walk to rivers to fetch water for cleaning which consumes a considerable amount of their learning time.

“Once they have water tanks, they will not need to walk out of their schools to get the commodity and will have more time to focus on their studies,” he said.

The MP also issued bursary cheques to 3,209 boarding school students, with each getting Sh6,000.

He said he has plans to construct a school for children with special needs who are forced to learn with others as the constituency lacks such a school.

Mugo said they have idenfied land for the construction of the school for children with special needs.

“We have written to relevant government agencies indicating our plans to construct such a school and once we get the approval, we will commence construction,” the MP said.

He said he will seek the partnership of private organisations and well-wishers to support learning.
