Two people sustained gunshot injuries while five others suffered wounds after being clobbered by police officers during a Wednesday protest in Migori county.

A woman is among those injured after police allegedly lobbed teargas in her house as she was preparing breakfast for her family.

Earlier, demonstrators vacated Migori town streets with shops and schools in the town closed.

Armed anti-riot police officers are said to have followed a group of youths inside Oruba estate in Migori town and started engaging them in residential areas.

The estate turned into the epicentre of the demonstrations.

The two people shot and the woman were rushed to Oruba nursing home for treatment where the doctors diagnosed the extent of the injuries and referred them to Migori County Referral Hospital for further surgery and treatment.

At Migori Referral Hospital, at least seven victims, including three were admitted with several injuries inflicted on them.

“One was shot on the left leg and the other on the right thigh,” Oruba Nursing Home doctor in charge Elijah Owuor Nyabwa said.

He said the three are in stable condition.

At the same time, residents of Migori complained of police brutality.

Charles Osewe, the Bunge la Wenyenchi chairman said that they will demonstrate peacefully as enshrined in the constitution.
