A 28-year-old man suspected of killing his two sons has been arrested.
The suspect, Evans Kang’ethe, fled his home in Mugua-Nyoni village in the Mugoiri area after allegedly killing his sons aged three and seven on Sunday night by slitting their throats.
Kang’ethe was apprehended near Maragua town on Tuesday while masquerading as a mentally ill man.
Police officers who apprehended him first took him to Gakoigo police post where a large crowd of residents gathered, baying for his blood.
The security officers had a hard time protecting the man from the irate members of the public who wanted to lynch him.
The man, they said, did not deserve to live and should face death.
Murang’a South subcounty police commander Gitonga Murungi said the suspect intended to board a matatu and get out of the area.
Gitonga said the suspect is now being held at Maragua police station awaiting further processing by police officers from Kahuro subcounty where the incident happened.
Residents said Kang'ethe sent his cousin a text message informing him that he had committed the offence before neighbours accessed his home and found the two children dead.
They then started searching for the culprit in vain before police officers got to the scene.
The suspect’s mother Anna Njeri said Kang’ethe had separated from his wife a week ago and was left in charge of the two children.
Kang’ethe will be arraigned in Murang’a law courts on Wednesday where he will be charged with murder.
