The Wajir government has started a programme to promote the use of solar energy.
The county has abundant sunshine, which offers limitless potential for solar energy.
The programme was launched on Thursday.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the time had come for the county to fully harness solar and make it an alternative source of energy.
The programme will be spearheaded by the Department of Energy and Mining.
Wajir residents have for years experienced frequent power outages forcing businesses, which suffer huge losses, to use generators.
Abdullahi said the project will begin with the solarisation of the county headquarters, which will mark a significant leap towards energy independence and environmental responsibility.
“We have successfully integrated a 140kVA solar backup system to power the entire headquarters building. With this installation now operational, we’ve achieved complete autonomy from Kenya Power and Lighting Company,” he said.
Abdullahi said the system ensures a seamless and uninterrupted electricity supply to the county headquarters.
“This remarkable achievement in solarisation is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable and self-reliant energy future,” he said.
The governor said his administration had prioritised reducing dependency on conventional energy sources and embracing renewable solutions.
Abdullahi said the solarisation of the county headquarters brings with it benefits such as energy autonomy, which guarantees enhanced security against power disruptions and outages, providing greater energy stability.
He said by harnessing the limitless potential of solar energy, his administration anticipates substantial savings in energy expenses over time, which can be redirected towards essential developmental projects.
“Furthermore, the transition to solar energy aligns perfectly with our county's ecological aspirations. The clean and renewable nature of solar power significantly reduces carbon emissions, showcasing our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Abdullahi added.
He said the county has finally embarked on a journey towards energy resilience, cost savings and environmental stewardship.
“We hope that our efforts serve as a model for other regions to follow and emulate,” Abdullahi said.
