At least 49 members of the Kiambu county assembly have come out to defend Governor Kimani Wamatangi over a looming impeachment saying that it will have disastrous consequences.
Kiambu has 60 elected MCAs and 27 nominated ones.
Peter Mburu, MCA Kamenu ward, while reading a statement during a press brief outside the assembly precincts on Friday said that as an assembly, they are unwilling to take the impeachment path.
"In the light of a statement made by some of our colleagues regarding a potential impeachment, we the undersigned members of county assembly firmly assert that Kiambu is not prepared for the removal of the Governor from office," Mburu said.
He said that the majority of MCAs share a common commitment to ensure that Kiambu does not go the impeachment route.
"The discussion of impeachment is driven by a few handfuls of disgruntled external forces attempting to sow discord within the assembly," he said.
A section of MCAs had on Wednesday given Governor Wamatangi an ultimatum of 21 days to address issues concerning fully constituting his cabinet for effective service delivery, inability to manage the county development plan, and illustrate the projects undertaken failure to which they will table an impeachment.
The MCAs defending the Governor said that for the last 10 years, Kiambu has suffered due to external strife and infighting and it is high time they usher in a new era of collaboration, purposeful leadership and oversight.
"Some of the people we suspect might be behind the impeachment scheme are in positions where they can influence policies beneficial to the county," they said.
The MCAs pointed a finger at Kiambu County members of the national assembly, cartels and contractors with a vested interest in being behind the lot to push for the Governor's impeachment.
Francis Koina, the deputy majority leader, said that it is evident that a section of Kiambu county Mps have collaborated with a few MCAs to push for impeachment and to destabilize Governor Wamatangi's administration.
"As leaders, we need to have a dialogue of how we will work for our people and deliver on the development agenda. It is unfair to start plotting against a government that was put in place by the people and should be given time and space to deliver its mandate," Koina said.
Eric Ndungu MCA Uthiru said being in the last regime as an MCA where they went through an impeachment of the Governor it did not bring the results intended but instead brought more problems to the county.
"We will not go through an impeachment process anymore as it does not bear the fruits intended," Ndungu said.
Grace Wanjiru MCA Kabete ward said that external forces have been interfering with county government work by dividing the county executive and the assembly.
"The members who are defending the governor are more than 60 and if an impeachment motion is brought to the floor of the house, we will shoot it down. We urge the members of parliament to respect the wishes of the Kiambu people who put Governor Wamatangi in office," she said.
