Kaiti MP Joshua Kimilu intends to table a Bill in Parliament to create an emergency kitty out of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund to assist persons affected by disasters.

The MP said the proposed emergency kitty would enable MPs to supplement government and partners’ efforts in responding effectively to emerging disasters such as the current enhanced rains across the country.

“In Parliament, we will bring a Bill to allow the board to give us authority to spend part of NG-CDF allocation to help people displaced from their homes,” he said.

Kimilu spoke Wednesday at Kya Kituku evacuation centre in Kilungu when he distributed food items to 405 people affected by the ongoing El Niño rains in Makueni county.

He distributed maize flour, sugar, rice, salt, tea leaves, vegetables, bar soaps and cooking oil.

Most of the affected families were from Kyang’aa and Mutuyu villages in Kilungu ward and Itaa village in Ilima ward.

The MP also toured the Katulye evacuation camp where he gave displaced families food.

He urged residents to remain vigilant during this rainy season, while also cautioning them against crossing flooded rivers.

“In my Kaiti constituency, we have lost five people and floods have destroyed houses. I appeal to the residents, especially those in mudslide prone areas, to move to safer grounds or camps,” he said.
