Traders in Kisii are counting losses after a fire razed their stalls on Thursday night.
The fire razed several business stalls in the vast Daraja Mbili market in Kisii town.
According to witnesses, the fire broke out in one stall at 10 pm before spreading to the adjacent areas.
Efforts to contain the inferno bore little fruit as officers from the fire emergency department arrived when most stalls had been consumed in flames.
Thomas Kebunde, an affected trader, told the Star they had lost millions of shillings to the inferno.
"While it is not easy to quantify everything right away, it definitely runs into millions," he told the Star.
Mary Kereira, a other trader said her entire stock was destroyed by the fire.
"There is nothing left but this smoldering ash, nothing... Oh Jesus help me," she said amid sobs pointing to other burned shops and stalls.
Police said they have begun investigations into the incident.
"Our officers are already on the scene and we shall get a clear picture of what happened and what shall be done," County police chief Charles Kasses said.
