Widows in Kisumu will now have reprieve after a human rights defence fund was launched to assist those facing threats, harassment and persecution in society.

The initiative, spearheaded by Grassroots Trust, aims to provide widows with access to justice and create a safe, inclusive environment for them.

Lawrence Apiyo, the Coordinator of Grassroots Trust, described the fund as a collaborative effort involving multiple organisations working in the region.

"We are committed to protecting widows and fostering a safe and inclusive environment for them," he said.

Widows dealing with issues such as land grabbing and eviction from their matrimonial homes will be supported through the legal processes.

"This initiative offers a holistic approach to addressing the complex issues widows face in society," Apiyo explained.

During the launch in Obunga slums, legal experts offered free consultations to the widows.

Apiyo said the fund was launched in the slum as many women, particularly widows, still face eviction.

"We are launching this fund to give Kenyans an opportunity to raise funds to support court cases whenever the rights of these widows are violated," he added.

Contributions to the fund can be sent through Paybill 880100, Account PAYWAKILI.

Once collected, the money will be used for legal assistance, safety support and temporary relocations for widows ejected from their matrimonial homes.

"We invite friends and people of goodwill to contribute whatever they can to support desperate cases that require legal action," he urged.
