Uasin Gishu county has so far employed more than 100 people with disability to ensure they actively participate in all development programmes.

Governor Jonathan Bii has directed his team to ensure a deliberate effort and policies in place for a safe working environment for all PWDs at the county and the community in the region.

The county’s department of social protection held training aimed at enhancing services to the persons living with disabilities and promoting disabilities mainstreamng in all operations.

Speaking at the event, Director for Social Protection Peter Ruto said their mission was to ensure that every individual, regardless of their abilities, has the support and services they need to live a fulfilling life.

"This training for social workers is a crucial step in enhancing our understanding and capabilities in serving persons with disabilities," Ruto said.

He said the PWDs should be enabled to participate in all public programmes and benefit from all initiatives, just like all other residents.

"It's not only a moral imperative but also a legal and social obligation to ensure that our services are inclusive and accessible to all," he said.

He further explained that disability mainstreaming is about integrating disability perspectives into all policies, programmes and practices within the county as directed by Governor Dr Bii.

"It's about recognizing the diversity and unique contribution of persons with disabilities and ensuring they are considered in every aspect of our working and operations as a county," he said.

Chairperson of Hope Disability Association Dan Koech said training social workers on emergency preparedness for people living with disability is important because PWDs are often forgotten, especially during emergencies

He said nominated Senator Bishop Jackson Kosgei was left alone and helpless when protesters invaded Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

"We are working towards an inclusive disaster and emergency preparedness and response strategy covering all of us, including those with various disabilities," said Koech.

He said special focus must be given to the PWDs

"Persons with disabilities should not be left behind or forgotten in all emergency evacuation services," he added.

Director for GenderJoywin Sang thanked Governor Bii for his steadfastness in ensuring the safety of persons with disabilities working in the departments.

She said the governor and his team would continue to avail opportunities to all residents, including those with disabilities.

Present also was Asbel Choge, who is the social protection administrator, and other social workers who are undergoing the training.
