KENYA will lose more than Sh8 billion in revenue annually if the defence cooperation agreement with Britain is not renewed, Laikipia East MP Anthony Mutahi has said.

He said Laikipia will be the hardest hit as it will be losing Sh2 billion in revenue.

Speaking during the opening of Chieni Supermarket in Nanyuki town on Saturday, Mutahi urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider renewing the agreement.

“We are on the ground and know what benefits we get from the British troops that train in Laikipia. They offer job opportunities to our youth, boost our economy, in addition to the corporate social responsibility they carry out,” he said.

Two months ago, Britain expressed hope that Kenya would renew the defence cooperation agreement for her troops to train in the country.

Head of communications at the British High Commission in Kenya Stephen Burns said they are still holding talks on renewing the agreement in line with Kenya and UK requirements.
