Kiambu Governor James Nyoro has called on his opponents to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the August 9 General Elections.
Nyoro, a Jubilee candidate, will face off with Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi, Thika MP Jungle Wainaina, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo.
“We shall take it seriously on whoever incites people and ensure he is held to account. Therefore as competitors, we must commit to peaceful campaigns.”
Nyoro spoke on Sunday after he was cleared by IEBC at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).
He said all aspirants have familiarised themselves with the Electoral Code of Conduct and each knows what is required of them.
Every aspirant must therefore commit that he or she will abide by the rules to ensure peaceful campaigns prevail, Nyoro said.
“I believe we shall have a joint meeting as contenders together with the IEBC so that we can harmonise and synchronise our campaign schedules and calendar which we have already submitted.”
Meanwhile, the incumbent county boss praised the manner the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was thorough when validating aspirants’ documents.
"It has been a journey and I would like to thank the IEBC because they have been very professional. They have taken an hour to peruse our documents meaning they are thorough and organized.”
Nyoro stated that IEBC has proved to be well prepared for the elections with no malpractice reported so far.
He expressed confidence that the electoral body will deliver free and fair elections.
“I have all the reasons to believe that IEBC is capable of delivering a free and fair election.
"I know we politicians want to have our way, but I think we must facilitate their work by conducting peaceful campaigns,” he said.
The Governor also called upon Kiambu residents to vote wisely and go for transformative and development-conscious government.
“This is a very difficult time and we are at a point where we can transform this county," the Governor said.
He said, given the opportunity, he will ensure good service delivery and finish the work he started including healthcare.
“With another five facilities which are about to be completed, we shall ensure they are fully equipped for residents to get a one-stop shop for healthcare services.
“We also want to decongest our hospitals by moving patients with noncommunicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cancer from Level 4 and 5 facilities,” Nyoro said.
At the same time, Nyoro denied allegations that he has been using public resources in his campaigns.
“We are not using public funds to campaign. We are prepared to do the campaigns using our personal resources because we were ready for it," he said.
"But also expect the use of public resources to ensure that there is service delivery until the election time is over,” he added.
