Twelve Kiambu County MPs have petitioned Trade CS Rebecca Miano over the construction of Special Economic Zones.

The MPs have expressed concerns that the county might lose investors if the CS fails to gazette the EPZ.

The MPs in a letter to the CS noted that the issue was raised in a recent meeting between them and President William Ruto.

" We did request him to assist the counties of Kiambu and Murang’a to have the twin EPZs gazetted, a request that he assented to positively, reads the letter dated November 2, 2023.

In their dismay, the MPs noted that the Murang’a county EPZ was gazetted but not for Kiambu.

The MPs noted that fast-tracking by the CS to gazette the EPZ will preempt the investable loss by the county of all investors to Murang’a.

"We, therefore, urge you to kindly this request as urgent," the MPs pleaded with the CS.

The MPs dragged Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi into the matter claiming that he had deliberately decided to  sabotage most of the National Government projects

"You may already have noticed that the uncooperative character of our Governor is this matter plus his deliberate efforts to sabotage most of the National Government projects including this EPZ and the affordable housing projects," reads the letter in part.

The MPs asked the CS to consider the huge population of unemployed youths yearning for a source of income from such investments as EPZs.

There have been tussles over the proposed EPZ site along Kenol Road in Murang’a County, Kiambu County has 100 acres of idle land ceded by the processor which is ideal for an EPZ.

The MPs who signed the letter include  National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wa who is also the Kikuyu Mp,  Alice (Thika Town), George Koimburi (Juja), Sion Kingara (Ruiru),  John Machua(Kiambu Town), John Njuguna (Kiambaa), John Kiragu (Limuru), Joseph Mburu (Lari), James Githua(Kabete), Gabriel Gathuka (Gatundu South)  and Nominated MP Teresia Wanjiru.

President Ruto last Friday hosted MPs from Kiambu County at State House, Nairobi.

The meeting was centred around development projects which are aimed at improving the productivity of the region.

"The government's economic plan will transform Kiambu County whose produce and productivity feed not just itself, but also the city-county of Nairobi," Ruto told the MPs.

The Head of State noted that to ensure that the county achieves its full potential, the government is implementing projects on last-mile water connectivity, construction of fresh produce markets, special economic zones and value addition of various produce.

The MPs were led by  National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wa who is also the Kikuyu Mp.
