Two children, aged six and four, were Tuesday killed in a fire tragedy in Nyandarua.

Police said the incident happened at the Heni Dispensary staff quarters at about 7 pm.

The fire affected the first floor of the house where the staff members at the facility live.

The house was made of wood, police said, adding that the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The mother of the children, who is a nurse at the facility, told police she had left the children in the house and went to a nearby shop to buy milk when the fire broke out.

She said on returning she found the house on fire.

This prompted her and the neighbours to raise the alarm as they struggled to contain the spread and rescue the children, in vain.

A fire engine was deployed to contain the fire. It was then that the remains of the bodies of the two girls were discovered. They were pupils at a local school.

Police said the whole house was flattened, adding that the bodies were moved to the Engineer Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

A team of experts, including officials from Kenya Power, were sent to the scene to boost the probe into the tragedy.

In Kiambu town, a trader said he lost property worth Sh20 million in a fire that broke out in a supermarket.

A guard told police he noticed fire emanating from the bakery section of the facility prompting him to raise the alarm.

A fire engine joined efforts to contain the spread of the fire.

Kiambu police boss Michael Muchiri said they had called experts to probe the incident, adding that no injuries were reported.

In Muranga, police said they are investigating arson in an incident where a house was burnt down.

The owner of the house said it was set on fire by unknown people. No injuries were reported in the incident.
