Man, 24, fined Sh100,000 for trafficking bhang in Murang'a

A 24-year-old man was fined Sh100, 000 by a Kenol court for trafficking bhang in Murang'a on Wednesday.

Edwin Maina appeared before resident magistrate Jackinda Rennah and was fined Sh100,000 or in default serve a prison sentence of one year.

According to facts tabled by the prosecutor Brian Ng’ang’a, the accused was found with 100gms of bhang worth Sh2,000 at Kiamara village in Maragua constituency on September 3, 2024.

While on patrol, the area chief  Joel Mwangi got a tip-off from members of the public that the accused was trafficking bhang at his place of work in Kiamara. 

At around 7am, the duo went to the accused’s workstation where they found him, conducted a search and retrieved  100gms of bhang and pieces of old newspapers in a black polythene bag.

They also found Sh5,650 believed to be the proceeds from selling the bhang in his right pocket trousers and arrested the accused.

The accused pleaded guilty but in mitigation admitted to possessing the bhang for his personal use, denying it was for trafficking.

He said the money he had at the time of the arrest was from his businesses and was meant to settle his household budget.

The accused was convicted on his plea of guilt and fined Sh100,000 or in default serve a year jail term.
