Maragua MP Mary Waithera has appealed to the Senate to spare Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who is set to defend himself in the house next week.

The deputy president is set to appear before the Senate following a resolution passed by the National Assembly on October 8 to have him impeached.

Waithera said legislators allied to him tried the best they could during the impeachment process in the national assembly but lost.

But she noted that senators have a chance to interrogate the evidence that will be tabled before the house by both Gachagua and Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse who introduced the impeachment motion, and that they should only make the final decision after keenly interrogating all documents.

“Senate is where the trial will be properly done because they will have the chance to interrogate the documents tabled and make a decision from a point of knowledge. In the national assembly, the process was hurried off,” she said.

Waithera, popularly known as Wa Maua, said when the Kenya Kwanza government was being formed, it was more popular in the Mt Kenya and Rift Valley regions, and that other regions only joined in later.

“When it came to the debate on who would deputize President William Ruto, we settled on Gachagua and Kithure Kindiki. It is Ruto who made the final decision. It is now very disturbing that he has been impeached only two years after elections,” she said.

But Waithera said she has faith that senators will make the right decision and that they will only impeach him if they confirm that he indeed had committed the alleged wrongs.

“May they be led by God so that even if they impeach him, they will give the right justification. I hope that the senators will not be influenced into making a certain decision,” she added.

Waithera spoke in Makuyu area in her constituency where residents voiced their disapproval of the impeachment process.

Johnson Githuka, a resident, said as Murang’a residents, they are unhappy.

“Let senators know we have been observing them since 2022. They will have to face us in 2027,” he added.

Julius Gitu, another resident, said they supported the Kenya Kwanza coalition wholeheartedly;

“We know some of our MPs supported the motion but they should know that we are firmly behind him,” he said.
