The Kikuyu Council of Elders have asked Kenyans to now focus on more serious issues after the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President.

The elders said the focus should be on service delivery and not the individual holding the seat.

Chairperson Wachira Kiago said Kenyans are longing for leaders who will improve their living standards.

“Whatever community the deputy president comes from or who he is does not matter. What’s important is how he will serve the country,” he said.

Speaking at the council’s headquarters in Ruaka, Kiambu county, Kiago urged Kenyans to accept the outcome of the impeachment, even as he appealed to the new DP Kithure Kindiki to serve Kenyans well.

“Kenyans want leaders who are committed to work and serve them. Leaders who ease access to education, ensure hospitals have drugs and reduce the cost of living,” he said

He reiterated the need for Kenyans to embrace harmony and shun divisive political engagements.

Kiago said a devastated economy would affect all Kenyans regardless of their communities and underscored the need for all to coexist peacefully.

He said it’s paramount for leaders to stop fighting among themselves as many citizens continue to languish in poverty and cry out to the government for better services.

The council’s patron in Nairobi County Kariuki Waweru called for political leaders to ensure the Public Participation Act of 2018 is strictly followed.

This is to accord Kenyans the right to participate in government activities.

“Kenyans should be allowed to air their views and their views put into account as the government is in place to work for them,” Waweru said.

“Whatever Kenyans do not appreciate, let the government know that they have spoken and act accordingly.”

He called on the Executive, Judiciary and Legislature to play their roles independently and observe the law.
