The Laikipia government has embarked on a programme to boost food production. The county has signed MoUs with five organisations that will help upscale agricultural activities and empower residents.
The organisations include Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, Participatory Ecological Land Use Management Association, Kickstart International, African Population and Health Research Center, Help Self Help Centre and Pioneer Child Development Programme.
Governor Joshua Irungu said his administration values strong partnerships that better the lives of residents.
“In these partnerships, we will work together to address critical issues ranging from agricultural and livestock production, fisheries, irrigation, agricultural mechanisation and cooperative development,” he said.
The MoU were signed following a two-day workshop in Nanyuki town that saw the partners discuss the current state of the county’s food systems, the challenges being faced, the food demands and what can be done to improve it.
Under the programme, residents will be trained on better farming practices and will also access modern farm equipment that will ease their agricultural activities while boosting food production.
They will also be empowered to engage in climate-smart agriculture including agroecology which has been touted as vital in improving farmers’ resilience to climate change while enabling residents to produce healthy foodstuff.
“We are all very confident that this initiative will be the turning point for our county in food production and will help us to become food secure,” the governor added.
