The US Ambassador Meg Whitman and Australian High Commissioner Luke Williams are in Kwale county to tour the mining site.

The two have visited the Australian mining firm company Base Titanium mining site for inspection of mine operations as efforts to prolong mining life continue.

Base Titanium has been fighting to extend its mining life in Kwale following the exhaustion of mineral deposits.

They held a closed-door meeting with Base Titanium External General Manager Simon Wall.

According to Wall, Whitman and Williams were examining the process of mining and land restoration.

"We have the privilege of receiving the US ambassador and the Australian high commissioner mainly to check on our operations, mineral production and have look at the rehabilitation on the previously mined areas," he said.

He said the company is determined to ensure safe mining and return the land to its normal state for post-mining land use.

Wall said despite efforts to find additional minerals the firm has also shifted focus on the possible closure of operations.

He said they want to conduct the decommissioning exercise most effectively.

"We are looking forward to executing the mine closure with the degree of excellency the same way we commissioned the construction and operations of this project," he said.

Wall said the Base is currently conducting explorations in Kwale East in a bid to extend mining operations.

He said at the moment, the mine is expected to end in December and they are optimistic about finding new minerals to push the mine's life a bit further.

Wall said the exploration work has continued to receive overwhelming support from both the community and government leadership.
