In a move aimed at stopping the spread of homosexuality in Mombasa, MCAs want to make it difficult for organisations supporting the gay to operate in the county.
Led by Kadzandani’s Fatma Kushe, the MCAs want to come up with a law that will bar any organisation that supports homosexuality, is sponsored by gay activists or organisations whose members are homosexuals, from conducting any activity in the county.
“This will be an anti-LGBTQ bill that will mirror the majority’s feelings in Mombasa. We do not want homosexuality in Mombasa,” Kushe told the Star on phone Sunday.
The MCAs, including Kushe, Milka Moraa (nominated), Hamida Nur (nominated), Fadhili Makarani (Port Reitz), Ali Simba (Tononoka) and Abdulrahman Hussein (Old Town) will Monday meet at the county assembly to work on the draft bill.
On Tuesday last week, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma challenging its February ruling that allowed the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission to register as a non-governmental organisation.
The MP has sponsored a stiffer anti-homosexuality bill that awaits introduction in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly sports and culture committee on Wednesday faulted the ruling saying it was “useless and dubious”. They said it would eventually lead to the erosion of Kenya’s cultural heritage and normalise indecent practices and unnatural acts that go against the penal code.
On Sunday, MCA Moraa said the ruling basically and technically allows homosexuality in the country, which has been criminalised in the penal code.
“We are drafting an anti-LGBTQ bill. We will customise it for Mombasa. We want to work against the leeway for them to form organisations to enjoy their immoral activities. We will not allow it to work in Mombasa,” Moraa said.
She said the Supreme Court ruling will expose Kenyan children to immorality which will attract the wrath of God.
“Who knows? Maybe the hardships we are facing in the country currently is a punishment from God because of such things. Maybe that is why Kenya has very bad leaders at the helm,” Moraa said.
She said in both the Bible and the Quran, homosexuality is wrong.
“We will not accept. We will start with motion, then we will do a policy and then a bill and we are 100 per cent sure it will pass because no leader in Mombasa wants homosexuality,” Moraa said.
On Friday, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali said the West is responsible for the imposition of homosexuality in the Kenyan society.
Speaking at the Makadara grounds after the anti-LGBTQ protest, Ali said, “If you want homosexuals, get them visas and take them to your countries.”
He said Africa will not be the playing ground for the West who want to impose their immoral cultures on other countries.
He said the constitution has criminalised homosexuality and Kenya is a God-fearing country.
“If you are a Christian follow Christianity. If you are a Muslim, follow Islam,” Ali said.
Kushe and Moraa said when it comes to issues of public interest, politics does not count.
“It is not about parties. It is about morals in society,” Moraa said.
Kushe said her Kadzandani ward is becoming the Sodom and Gomorrah of Mombasa.
“While doing research for the bill I am coming up with, I have learnt a lot of things about this community,” she said.
She however said the things the gay community is advocating for does not sit well with the African values.
She noted that the NGOs that supporting the vice have been trying to get her to stop her anti-LGBTQ campaign, even offering her huge sums of money to drop the bill.
“I will not accept their dirty money lest I be struck by Allah. The Supreme Court judges that are trying to push this vice down our throats will face Allah’s wrath,” she said.
Kushe said instead of the West pumping money into Kenya through NGOs to support homosexuality, they should pump in more money for food, medicine and other things that really matter to Kenyans.
“We are facing Shakahola in Kadzandani. People there live on one meal a day because of poverty and the high prices of commodities. Why don’t these organisations come to their aid instead?” she posed.
