At least 18 KCSE candidates and 8 locals were on Thursday rescued after being trapped in the overflowing Ramisi River at the Ramisi Bridge in Kwale County.

The river broke its banks following the ongoing heavy downpour.

The trapped school children and residents were rescued by the Kenya Coast Guards who had been deployed in the area and ferried to safety.

Transport activities were also paralyzed for several hours as it rained heavily leaving hundreds of daily commuters stranded.

The bridge is at the moment a no-go zone and motorists have been advised to keep off.

According to the county commissioner Michael Meru Mwangi said several rivers also broke their banks disrupting transport operations.

Some of the rivers that are flooded include Umba, Mkurumudzi, Mwena and Mbadi among others.

"All the rivers in the county are flooded but we are glad no deaths were reported and I would like to caution residents not to cross," he said.

Mwangi said the heavy downpour has affected the delivery of the KCSE examination papers in various schools in Lunga-Lunga and Kinango sub-counties as roads became impassable due to flooded rivers and mud.

He said it's taking four hours for the examination papers to reach their destination.

The county commissioner said the rain is not to be underestimated, warning residents living in lowland areas to move to higher grounds.

"It's time people should take precautions and vacate the flood-prone areas," he said.

Some areas in Ukunda were also affected by the clogged water that flooded villages and roads.

In 2021 River Umba broke its banks flooding over 350 acres in the Lunga-Lunga sub-county and a 32-year-old mother with her two-year-old son drowned while trying to cross the flooded Mwavumbo river in Kinango.
