Tononoka residents in Mombasa county are set to benefit from a 1,000 cubic metre capacity sewage treatment plant being built at the Sh6 billion Buxton Point affordable housing project.

The plant will also serve the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital and the Kenya Medical Training College.

The plant, which cost a whopping Sh100 million, will be ready for use at the end of the month.

GulfCap Real Estate, the developer, said the facility will help address some of Mombasa's long-standing wastewater management challenges.

The former Buxton Estate relied on outdated septic and soak pits that would break down frequently.

This posed a constant threat of water contamination and children getting sick most of the time.

“Not anymore. As a commitment to the community and the environment, we integrated modern, quality homes with top notch amenities into the project and prioritised a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment not only for Buxton Point residents but also other critical stakeholders,” Project Manager Muhammad Maddy said.

He said the new facility will treat wastewater and ensure safe and clean water is released into the ocean.

“This will help not only safeguard public health but also preserve the fragile coastal ecosystem. We care about the environment and especially the ocean, which Phase 2 of our project will be part of,” Maddy said.

GulfCap Real Estate CEO Chris Ochieng said Buxton Point Phase 2 will see the construction of a 16-storey building.

The building will provide home owners with a fascinating sea view from their apartments and appreciate the beauty of Mombasa.

“The development will involve rooftop terraces and high-speed elevators which will be installed to allow access to the high-tower buildings that are set to change Mombasa’s skyline.

“The view of the ocean from the apartments will be breath-taking and will go a long way in providing natural therapeutic stress relief,” he said.

The new wastewater treatment plant will provide a relief on the strain the existing Mombasa sewage treatment infrastructure is undergoing.

"At GulfCap, we believe in building beyond bricks and mortar. We invest in projects that uplift communities and create a lasting positive impact. This STP is a testament to that commitment," Ochieng said.

"By implementing this technology, we are addressing a critical need for Mombasa and contributing to a cleaner, healthier future for all."

Mombasa Lands and housing executive Mohamed “Amadow” Hussein said the plant will be a game changer in Mombasa's housing sector.

“We encourage such innovation because environmental issues lie at the heart of our blue print,” Amadow said.

He said the sewage treatment plant that Buxton Point is putting up will be replicated in county's affordable housing projects in Tudor, Likoni and Changamwe.

“It will help because they have an arrangement with Mombasa Water and Sanitation Company. We want to ensure that Mombasa residents stay in houses that are environmentally friendly and safe,” Amadow told the Star on phone.

He said the county will engage the best contractors, who will work with the local communities for its affordable housing projects.

He commended GulfCap for its unwavering dedication to environmental, social, and governance principles as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
