Controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie and his 94 other co-accused persons had to wait for over two hours as the court read 238 manslaughter charges against them.
The charge sheet had 479 pages.
The charges against the 95 accused persons started to be read to them at around 1:54 pm, but by 15:30 pm the court clerks had only covered 100 offences.
The prosecution counsels complained that some suspects had dozed off as the charges were being read.
They were all expected to plead guilty or not guilty to each of the 238 offences.
It had been agreed that they plead guilty or not guilty in unison in a chorus.
"We have noted that some accused persons are not pleading to the charges. For the court record, they should all be attentive and respond," one of the prosecution counsels said.
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuka asked all the suspects to be alert.
The court session was scheduled for 9:30 am, but it was delayed after the suspects arrived in court at mid-day.
According to prison wardens, the Prison bus that was carrying the suspects from Shimo La Tewa Prison to Mombasa Law Courts broke down in the Bombolulu area.
"The mechanics tried to repair the bus for almost an hour. A truck had to be brought to carry the suspects," an officer said.
The truck also developed a mechanical problem in the Bondeni area within Mombasa town.
Police Landcruisers had to be brought to assist transfer all the suspects to Mombasa Law Court in smaller groups.
The 95 suspects are facing 238 charges of manslaughter of people whose bodies were exhumed from Shakahola.
Last week, the 95 were also charged with terror-related offences for the deaths of people who were exhumed from Shakahola.
They all denied the charges.
