Coast political leaders will meet in Mombasa on Monday to discuss the muguka issue and come up with a united voice.

The muguka ban was imposed in three Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi and Taita Taveta counties.

A Embu court however suspended the ban temporarily.

On Sunday, UDA vice chairman and EALA MP Hassan Omar said the muguka issue is one that affects the Coastal generation and there should be a sobre discussion.

“We can agree with him (Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir) on this one issue because we want to protect our next generation," he said.

“We cannot allow a few people to profiteer at the expense of our people."

He said the most advanced economies with state-of-the-art laboratories have done tests on the miraa and muguka and found they have harmful ingredients with negative effects on the health of the users.

He spoke at the Hustler Centre in Mombasa.

Women, civil society, elders and educationists have all voiced their support for Nassir saying they will back him up in the war against muguka.

They say muguka has wasted hundreds of thousands of youth in the Coast region who are turning out to be zombies because of the herb.

Omar on Sunday said the promoters of miraa and muguka have failed to produce any evidence that the herb is not harmful to human health.

Mbeere North MPM Geoffrey Ruku said muguka economy generates Sh22 billion annually for Embu county.

“And therefore we cannot stay comfortable when some governors are issuing executive orders as far as muguka is concerned,” Ruku said on Saturday.

Omar said he has no problem with leaders from Embu and Meru counties where muguka comes from but he is determined to ensure the Coast region is not destroyed through drugs.

“Let us be truthful. We don’t have any problem with our brothers (from Embu) but we will stand with what is right,"he said.

“We will work with them in a big way but for today, we have to protect our children."
