The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya leaders have slammed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his one man, one vote, one shilling proposal, saying this will bring conflicts and division among Kenyans.

They said Kenya is already facing political heat and "no one should add fuel to the fire".

They have accused the DP of pushing the one man, one shilling agenda so he can be recognised as the Mt Kenya kingpin.

However, Gachagua has defended his proposal.

Gachagua said his stand on the revenue-sharing formula is just an opinion which cannot be forced on Kenyans.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua told off leaders who have been calling him a tribalist over his push for one man, one vote, one shilling revenue-sharing formula.

“The fact that I am Deputy President does not extinguish my right as a Kenyan, as per the Constitution to have an opinion.  That opinion is not a command, allow me to persuade you that this formula can work,” he said.

CIPK organising secretary Muhammed Khalifa said the one man, one vote, one shilling conversation does not benefit Kenyans, because it is a discussion that brings incitement, tribalism and division.

He said this is not the right time for politics and the DP should not incite and divide Kenyans, because his office is meant to serve everyone and not one tribe.

"The DP was chosen by Kenyans to serve everyone. We want to remind him of the responsibility he has been given by the Constitution, which is serving Kenyans," Khalifa said.

"For him to say the Kenya Kwanza government is for those who have shares, means the government is not for everyone."

Sheikh Khalifa urged entities dealing with conflict matters to take action.

He urged Gachagua to stick to his responsibilities of fighting drugs and other roles that he has been given, not incite Kenyans.

"And if he cannot do it, let him declare it and step aside rather than telling people that the government is for those with shares. We are all Kenyans who live as brothers. We should not be divided," Khalifa said.

"When politics time comes in 2027, people will be allowed to do politics, but for now, let us focus on developing our country."

CIPK chairman Abdallah Ateka said as religious leaders, they are not against people uniting, but they want the DP to remember that his office is supposed to unite all Kenyans, not people from a certain region.

"These politics he has come up with recently are politics of hate. If you say that allocation of money be done according to 'one shilling, one vote, one man', it will really affect some regions," he said.

CIPK national treasurer Hassan Omar said Kenya is facing a lot of challenges and the DP needs to sit down with other leaders and find a way of addressing them, not dividing the nation.
