The Muslims Women Advancement of Rights and Protection has initiated a three-year civic education programme to empower youth, women and people with disabilities.

The public participation and civic engagement programme seeks to equip young people with essential leadership skills, an understanding of the budget-making process and governance principles.

The goal is to transition the targeted group into successful leaders and active contributors to governance and economic development.

The NGO's coordinator, Mwalimu Ali, highlighted longstanding grievances from youth, women and people with disabilities regarding their exclusion from crucial development initiatives at both county and national government levels.

He said the programme seeks to address challenges affecting the youth by promoting inclusivity and preparing the marginalised groups for future roles in leadership and decision-making.

"We have received numerous complaints about the neglect of youth and other marginalised groups in the budget-making process and overall development agenda. Our intervention aims to empower them," Ali said.

He said the organisation wants to shape a generation of capable and responsible leaders and one that is proactive in advancing social justice and economic prosperity for all.

Ali said the initiative underscores a commitment to bridging gaps in representation and ensuring all sectors of society have a voice in shaping their communities' future.

He said through education and empowerment, they strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone can contribute to and benefit from sustainable development efforts.

Ali said they bring together leaders of targeted groups and help them understand how things work from policy making to implementation of development projects and to take part in oversight roles.

He said informed and active participation not only enhances young people's own prospects but also enriches the overall governance and development landscape of the country.

"Effective communication about project milestones and challenges is critical for increasing transparency and accountability," Ali said.

He said the strategic approach aims to maximise impact while optimising resources, resulting in long-term growth and prosperity.

Nasra Salim, a youth, said the project has enlightened them and provided new opportunities for growth and learning.

She said the project has inspired young people to actively engage in initiatives that contribute to their development and the broader society.

"Before this programme, I would blame leaders. I have realised we have a role to play in public participation and development," Salim said.

Hemedi Hamisi said he now understands governance and the proper channels for submitting complaints, ensuring effective and proper leadership.

He said knowledge gained through the project has empowered him and his peers to advocate transparency and accountability in leadership.
