Plans for an extensive operation to inspect construction projects across Mombasa are underway, as there are concerns about structures built with substandard material, poor workmanship, and even water pathways, which pose significant risks to residents.
A stern warning has also been issued to builders and developers constructing without proper approval from the county authorities.
Paul Manyala, Mombasa County Director of Lands and Urban Planning, announced these plans as he was addressing the tragic incident involving the collapse of a perimeter wall that claimed the lives of 8 people in KCC Miritini, Jomvu Constituency.
Speaking at the scene, Manyala revealed that preliminary investigations indicated the wall had been constructed with poor workmanship and use of substandard material.
He assured residents that authorities would take immediate action to demolish the remaining sections of the wall to prevent further danger and restore a sense of safety in the community.
“This is a warning to all developers—take the initiative to comply, or we will act, and any demolitions will be done at your own cost,” Manyala stated as he reiterated that the operation aims to ensure all developments meet safety and regulatory standards to protect the lives of residents.
The tragic incident has left a community in mourning. Among the 8 deceased included an expectant mother of twins. A six-month-old baby remains in critical condition at the Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital, fighting for survival.
The disaster unfolded during a heavy downpour as mourners sought shelter by the wall while attending a funeral.
Four victims were pronounced dead on the spot, while 3 others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at the Hospital. The heart-wrenching tragedy has left the bereaved families grappling with grief and financial hardships.
Residents expressed their fear and frustration, urging the County Government to expedite the demolition of the remaining sections of the wall, which they say is a ticking time bomb.
“We cannot continue living in fear. This wall must come down before it claims more lives,” one resident remarked.
Families of the deceased have also called on the National Government to step in with compensation and ensure the company responsible for the faulty construction is held accountable.
“We’ve lost our loved ones and breadwinners, and now we are left with funeral expenses we cannot afford. Justice must be served,” a bereaved family member pleaded.
As investigations into the cause of the collapse continue, the incident has reignited concerns over poor construction practices and the enforcement of building regulations in the region.
