A family in Makueni is looking for the body of their son who drowned in the crocodile-infested River Athi while swimming two days ago.
Local divers have been helping with the search for the body of the 17-year-old.
Makueni county Red Cross manager Robert Muli said the firstborn in a family of seven from Mbavani village in Mbooni subcounty was swimming with two other boys when he drowned on Saturday.
"We have unsuccessfully been looking for the body with the help of volunteer local divers due to the raging waters in the river," Muli told the Star on Monday.
He said the river is infested with crocodiles and the divers cannot venture far from the banks.
Muli said the only option left was to wait for the body to float.
He said the decision was reached by local community leaders and national and county government administrators because it would be unwise to put more lives at risk.
"We have alerted community members downstream in case they see a floating body. We have also sent a signal to workers at Thwake Dam where the body of another man was recovered two weeks ago," Muli said.
Chief Mutua Mulee said the boy's relatives are receiving counselling at Makueni County Referral Hospital.
