Detain drunk motorists to stop unnecessary deaths – DG Mwangangi urges police

Mwangangi says not even dignitaries should be spared in the crackdown on drunk motorists.

Police shouldn’t spare any drunk motorists despite their social status, Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has said.

Mwangangi said all those found driving under influence of alcohol or drugs should be held in police cells until they regain their consciousness to prevent unnecessary fatalities on our roads.

“During this festive season, I urge all motorists of private and public service vehicles to be more careful while on roads. Don’t drive while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs and substance abuse,” he said.

He spoke as he addressed faithful at ABC Bomani church in Machakos county on Sunday.

“Let them go to their homes the following day while sober so that they neither risk their lives alongside other road users,” he said.

Mwangangi said police should do everything possible within the law to ensure that there is safety on our roads during the festive season.

His remarks came hours after a motorist died after he rammed into a moving trailer along Mombasa road in Machakos county.

Police said Felix Mutua died on the spot in the Sunday morning accident.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Mary Njoki said the accident occurred at Vista area in Kyumbi at around 6.15 am.

"Bonface Ndolo was driving from Mombasa towards Nairobi. On reaching at the location of the accident, a salon car driven by an unknown driver rammed into the rear of the trailer," she said on phone.

"As a result of the impact, the saloon car's driver sustained serious head and chest injuries and died on the spot."

The police boss said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was driving while drunk.

"The motorist rammed into the trailer because he was drunk," Njoki said.

Mwangangi eulogised Mutua as a neighbour and his long-time friend.

“It’s with great sadness that I have leant passing on of Felix Mutua my neighbour at home and a long time friend through a tragic road accident today in the morning. Felix has been dear to us and we thank God for the time He gave us to be with him here on earth.”

“To drivers on our roads, let’s be cautious and mindful of other road users to avoid loss of lives,” he said.
