Kwame Otiende Foundation has partnered with the police in educating 200 boda boda riders from Kasipul constituency on traffic rules, security and financial management.

The foundation also issued reflector jackets and helmets to the boda boda riders to enhance their compliance to traffic rules.

Director at the foundation Kwame Otiende also gave the boda boda riders a working capital of Sh50,000.

The money was deposited with Topkrim Deposit Taking Sacco.

Police highlighted the importance of complying with traffic rules to avoid accidents and arrests. They are required to have licences, insurance cover and other protective gear for their safety.

Otiende said their agenda is to transform the lives of the riders by giving them support.

He said the majority of the riders who are youths have been struggling to make ends meet.

The Rachuonyo South boda boda association through their chairman Naboth Bunde had requested the foundation to provide them road safety kits.

“The empowerment programmes we're providing are aimed at transforming the riders as individuals and the sector. We want to enhance their capacities in saving and to access loans,” Otiende said.

Speaking during the sensitisation drive in Oyugis town, Otiende urged the riders to come together for welfare and the growth of the association.

Health officers from Rachuonyo Level 4 Hospital attended the event.

Otiende said working in groups will enable the riders to get support with ease.

“You're able to pool your resources and help one another if you work as a team. Such unity can also help you get your own Sacco,” he added.

Topkrim Deposit Taking Sacco chairman Isaiah Opere urged the riders to develop a saving culture so they can easily access loans.

He said the Sacco will regularly engage the riders on financial management for their economic benefits.

“Saving enables one to access loans besides becoming self-reliant. It is high time boda riders stopped the hand to mouth way of life they are associated with,” Opere said.

Association chairman Naboth Bunde said the acquisition of the kits is one way of complying with traffic rules.

He urged the riders to use them appropriately. The association has 4,100 registered members.

“Donning reflector jackets and helmets protect road users from and during accidents. Let motorcyclists have knowledge about passengers they carry to reduce cases of crime,” Bunde said.
