Two women MPs from Kitui on Tuesday expressed shock over the alleged move to withhold results for all the  2023 KCSE candidates at St. Mulumba Matinyani Boys Secondary School.

Kitui County Women representative Irene Kasalu and Kitui West MP  Edith Nyenze asked the KNEC to fast-track the investigation into the suspicion of alleged examination malpractice and give a verdict by January 20.

The school is found in Nyenze’s constituency.

The two leaders who expressed doubt on the allegation of examination malpractices said it was surprising that the results for a school that has been performing exemplary in KCSE could be blamed for malpractice.

As candidates from other schools in Kitui county received their results, those from Matinyani had grades for all the subjects they wrote in the examination given as W in the KNEC result portal.

The school principal Nelson Mureithi had earlier confirmed to the media that the results for the school that posted the best performance among all schools in Kitui County in the 2022 KCSE  had been withheld.

Speaking to the Star on phone, he said he did not have details on the reason why the examination results were withheld.

He said he was in the process of reaching the Kitui Director of Education as to why KNEC took such drastic action against the  School.

“Just like the students, teachers, parents and the school community are patiently waiting for the outcome of the investigation into exam malpractice allegations,  let everyone remain patient,” said Mureithi.

Kitui County Director of Education Khalif Hassan said the exams Council was investigating allegations of malpractice.

He expressed optimism that KNEC would sooner than later release the examination results for the now distraught candidates.

Hassan said the KNEC  acted within the realms of the law as it is allowed to withhold results for candidates whenever there were examination issues that required investigation.

He said there was a need for all stakeholders and the Matinyani School fraternity to remain calm as the matter would be resolved before the end of next week.

"There are many schools across the country whose results have been withheld. KNEC has communicated to my office on Matinyani Boys Secondary School results, and we can only wait for the outcome of their probe,” said Hassan.
