Senator Wambua to pay fees for stranded top KCPE learner

Kitui senator Enoch Wambua on Tuesday rekindled the dimming dream of a 14-year-old 2023 KCPE candidate on the verge of missing admission to form one.

Wambua came to the rescue of Phelomenah Muthoni who scored 393 marks in 2023 KCPE but her single mother could not finance her secondary school.

She remained at home as her fellow students joined various schools across the country starting early last week.

The girl unable to join the prestigious Karima Girls secondary school in Central Kenya was disillusioned and faced a bleak future until the Senator learned about her plight and offered to help on Tuesday.

Wambua announced the sponsorship during a public rally at Kabati slaughterhouse in Kauwi ward of Kitui West constituency where the concern of the bright girl was brought to the limelight by leaders led by MCA Gabriel Munyao.

"I want to announce that from today, this girl has become my child. Onwards, I will give her full sponsorship through secondary school up to university."

"Her mother only needs to do some little shopping for her as fees is fully catered for," said the senator as the crowd cheered.

He asked the Kauwi chief Thomas Mutuku to immediately seek to secure a form 1 vacancy in one of the local prime girls schools like Muthale and Kyondoni Girls where he will fully sponsor her education.

Speaking to the Star,  the girl’s mother, Jane Mueni, 45, lauded the senator's Kind gesture. She said to her the act was the working of God. 

"I had lost hope of my daughter joining secondary school because I could not afford the fees. I have been stretched to the limit as I have two of her siblings at the University of Nairobi and Maseno University respectively."

"The university fees has left me penniless," said the single mother of six.

Jane who said she had nowhere to call home after being evicted from her late mother’s land added that she lived in a rented house at the Kabati trading centre with all her children.

He described the Senator’s intervention as truly God-send.

Muthoni said that she would wish to pursue a career in interior design at university and not only self-employ herself but also offer jobs to youth.

She said she was heartbroken when she realized that her mother could not afford to finance her secondary education despite being on top of her  2023 KCPE class at the  St. Marks Makutano Primary School.
