Embu Judicial staff conduct peace walk in mourning Magistrate Monica Kivuti

Law Society of Kenya Embu Chapter have today held a peaceful walk, in solidarity with the unfortunate loss of Makadara Law Court Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti who lost her life through a gunshot while on duty.

While speaking during the exercise in Embu town on Tuesday, the members led by Justice Rose Migwi the LSK Embu Chapter chairperson, condemned the incident.

Migwi demanded protection for judicial officers to prevent them from threats from both the members of the public, government officials and any form of criminals.

“We’re condemning her murder and we’re holding a peaceful walk to stand in solidarity with our own and give support to the family. We also wish to pass the message to members of the public that we’re human and we also deserve protection from threats,” she said.

Migwi urged the Judicial Service Commission to place the security of its staff at the forefront because no one is immune to harm.

She said the officials have been determined to serve their mandate and their security should be paramount to ensure the justice is exercised.

Environment Judge Antony Kaniaru who spoke on behalf of presiding judge Lucy Njuguna, emphasized the need for government to offer protection to the judicial staff henceforth.

He said the event should catalyze concerned officials in the welfare of the judicial officials.

“We’d wish that no one of our own loses his/her life through similar circumstances as our heroine Monica,” he said.

He further clarified that the judicial services will continue as usual within Embu County justice institutions.

Kaniaru said they’ll continue mourning Magistrate Monica Kivuti while offering their services and nothing will come to a halt in the corridors of justice.

The judicial staff and advocates conducted a peaceful walk procession from Embu law courts, along the Embu town and back to courts where they conducted prayers to condole with the family.

Kivuti succumbed to gunshot injuries while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital on Friday, June 14.

She was shot on Thursday, June 13 afternoon, at the Makadara Law Courts after a ruling by a senior Police Officer.

Monica Kivuti was born and raised in Embu County.
