Anti-government protesters have unsuccessfully attempted to storm the Machakos police station in a bid to free their colleague allegedly arrested by the police.

The youths in their tens charged to the station located a few metres from the Machakos law courts and after word went round that one of them had been arrested and detained at the station during the ongoing demonstrations.

Their attempts to access the station to have the youth claimed to be in police custody released, were thwarted by police officers.

They were repulsed by the officers who fired teargas canisters at them a few metres from the station's entrance.

The incident happened shortly after the demonstrators poured to Machakos town streets paralysing operations in the town.

Traders closed their businesses with motorists equally avoiding the town.

Elsewhere on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, transport was paralysed Tuesday morning after protestors barricaded it at Mlolongo town before they were reversed by police officers.

GSU personnel took over the town after the demonstrators lit live fires on the highway making transport impossible.

The Mombasa -Nairobi Lane was closed by the demonstrators forcing motorists to move to the Nairobi general direction and divert on the Nairobi Expressway.

The GSU, officers, however, with the backup from their colleagues from other formations in the National Police Service restored the situation.

They pushed the demonstrators away from the highway as the Expressway remained heavily guarded and out of bounce.

In Kitengela, Kajiado County, demonstrators got to the streets in their hundreds and blocked the Nairobi- Namanga Highway with stones as they lit live fires.

The protesters engaged police officers in running battles for the better part of the day.

They at some point forcible had a ride on two police motor vehicles, a land cruiser and a lorry.

All shops were closed as their owners feared being attacked and businesses looted due to the melee.

The protests were still ongoing by press time. The situation has paralysed transport in Kitengela.
