Two people have died and another was injured in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Phyllis Muthoni said the duo died on the spot after the vehicle they were travelling in got involved in an accident at the Maanzoni area in Athi River, Machakos County, on Thursday.

The injured victim was rushed to Machakos Level Five hospital for medication as the bodies were removed to the same facility’s mortuary.

It’s said the incident involved two buses whose wreckage was towed to Kyumbi police station awaiting inspection. It was a head-on collision.

The incident caused a traffic snarl on the busy highway that was cleared by traffic officers from Kyumbi police station, who swiftly responded to the scene.

The incident happened a few kilometres from the scene where the missing Treasury employee Evans Chirchir reportedly died in a hit-and-run road accident on August 31, 2024.

Muthoni warned motorists plying the highway to be more cautious while using the road to avoid unnecessary accidents leading to deaths.
